Want to buybrooches etc for Flags?

Post  Kirsty on Sat Dec 20, 2008 10:59 pm

A sub-topic from the online stores section.

I'll be making an order from Mercia Sveiter at start of January. Let's say Deadline of 7th Jan

http://www.re-enactment.biz/bronzeindex.html

Item are listed along left hand side by period.

They are the cheapest your going to get in terms of re-enactment. The items are all based on actual finds for the most part.

I strongly recommend brooches at least for everyone.

I expect payment at first/second training session of new term.

Post your order below.

Shipping is cheaper the more people buying stuff, and the pound is doing really bad lately. Abuse it. Smile

If anyone is unsure about what to get, just post and someone will kindly help you.

Same goes if you're just plain torn between which thing to get.

Im considering having it silver plated for extra bling.

Do you have any experience with silver plated brooches?
Does it wear easily? Im not going to be wearing it a whole lot so maybe it will last a good while.

I have silver and gold plated normal jewellery, they keep well enough, plating is probably more accurate of pre-viking anyway given the scarity of silver, so if it wears it's completely normal.

be careful with plating.
make sure that there have been at least one pre-viking Irish made penannular that was of silver/silver plating.
to be sure of the authenticity.

if you are doing pre-viking and have a silver bling thing, then be wary. but if you can source a find of such, then use it as evidence and use the poetic licence thingy on it.

just my 2 cents.

yeah silver is rare enough alright sure even the ardagh chalice is only plated silver on top of shite metal.

gold plating might be best if your going that route.

might also be useful to contact the guy who owns the site and ask about the original brooch.

Im slowly recovering evidence for pre Viking silver.
The excavation reports from Lagore and Ballinderry are so painfully tedious to go through however.

Irish archaeology illustrated states by 600AD silver plating and casting was happening.
A tinned bronze penandular was found at Lagore was dated to 700AD so if tin plate maybe silver plate is feasible

Not any specific year just yet but 600 -790 is my primary aim. Id like to do hiberno norse Irish or Hiberno norse norse in the future though.

well its prob best to start with a specific year in mind like dates discovered for a certain excavtation site and base yourself around that then work in a wider context of that date then you can broaden your date ranges.
