Properly designed chainmail

Post  Kirsty on Thu Dec 11, 2008 5:56 pm

Yes, the accuaracy/reality of 'real armour of god' is at times questionable at best, but I have found a surprising selection of chainmail.

yes some of it is bollox, but the design of some are very good, and I haven't seen it anywhere else, except for documentary pictures.

check out:

Chainmail coif RL

Chainmail coif UD

Chainmail Chausse

Norman Chainmail
The sleeves may need the addition of a chainmail mitten to be more accuarate.

Remember:

Chainmail is easily tailored!

Don't go near aluminium

Avoid chainmail pants at all costs!!! your balls will thank you

Not in the specific ones i have linked above.

The coifs have the mouth closure dealies, which gdfb do not have.

the chausse may well be the similar but they're chausse, there isn't much variety in what they can look like.

and the hauberk, is full sleeved with an attached coif (and full skirt), I haven't seen that anywhere in a shop.

gdfb hauberks are half done cop outs when it comes to chainmail.

Kirsty,

Your comment about GDFB seems a bit harsh. Also, you need to clarify what you mean by GDFB. gdfb.co.uk is not the same as GDFB Global, which is the company it all started with. For what it's worth, GDFB Global is working on getting their mail items as accurate as possible. Keep watching their website as there will be some highly interesting new things coming out in the near future.

The pages you have linked to leave a lot to be desired. I would caution against purchasing something from only a generic drawing. You have to ask yourself "why do they not have a real photograph of the actual object for sale?" Another thing is that almost every piece of mass-produced mail is manufactured by the same people in India. This is why there is so little variation in what it looks like.

As always, buyer beware. Wink
